Obituary of Joseph "Joey" George Kewalis, Jr.
Joseph “Joey” George Kewalis, Jr. age 74, beloved husband of Grace A. Farley Kewalis, of Oxford, died March 24, 2016 at the West Haven Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Born in Derby on March 14, 1942, he was the son of the late Joseph George and Gladys Thorpe Kewalis, Sr. Mr. Kewalis graduated from Pine Technical High School of Ansonia and was a proud U.S. Air Force Veteran. He worked for the former B.F. Goodrich Co. of Shelton, but made a career of making children and adults happy as the community ice cream man for over 50 years. He was a fixture at Southford Falls State Park, peddling ice cream and working on his tan. A longtime resident of Ansonia before moving to Oxford in 1973, he was a member of the Slovak Club, Liberty Hall and the Norwood AC. Together with his wife of 40 years, they enjoyed many winter seasons on Florida’s Gulf Coast and Miami. He is survived by his cherished daughters, Tina Kewalis and Jennifer Lupone both of Oxford; an Uncle, Jack Thorpe and his companion, Barbara Hayes of Seymour; and cousin, Martin (Lynn) Kevalis of Ansonia. A Mass of Christian Burial, MEETING DIRECTLY AT CHURCH, will be Celebrated on Thursday, March 31, 2016, at 10:00 AM in the Church of the Good Shepherd, 135 Mountain Rd., Seymour. Military Honors will be accorded following Mass. Interment will be private. Family and friends may call on Wednesday, March 30, 2016, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM in the Wakelee Memorial Funeral Home, 167 Wakelee Avenue, Ansonia.
