I just learned of Ed Coffey's passing and I was struck by a flood of memories of my time with him as my teacher at Fairfield Woods Junior High circa 1971. Ed is the reason that I became passionate about history and later got an undergrad and master's degree in the field. Today I am an independent historian and that passion he instilled in me yet endures. I only wish I had taken the time to reconnect with him in later years. Still, we can indeed say that his life was historic because he touched so many other lives.

Dear Coffey Family, I want to send my condolences for your loss! I apologize for the lateness! I am deeply sorry to see him go, at 84! He must have been sick for some time, as I did sent a Christmas card over to the house this year! I had and knew Mr. Coffey at FHS from 93-96, and so on through the years! My mother, Donna had him in Pequot School way back when she was a kid! He was a very nice a caring person! I remember when he came over to Shelton, wth Jennifer, she was about 8, to take me to the FHS 97 graduation! I remember we dropped off, and picked up her at Aunt Audrey’s house! Very nice of him to do that, and I always thank him for that! I have a picture of my mother’s class with Mr. Coffey in it! When I find where I put it, i’ll either leave it here, or you can leave me a email/txt where to send it to! I wish the Coffey family all the best in the coming years! It will be tough to get over, but time with pass and heal! If you need anything, let me know on here, and I’ll get back to you! Our Deepest Sympathies, Shawn Collier and Family Shelton

Hi Shawn, my apologies for the late response. Thank you for your kind note. We deeply miss my dad, but have received hundreds of messages from his former students and it means a lot to know he touched so many lives. Hope you and your family have a happy Thanksgiving!

I had Mr. Coffey as a teacher in both middle school and in high school. He was easily one of my most favorite teachers. Besides being so passionate about history and sharing that with us, what I remember most is how kind and patient he was with us. He was truly a wonderful man.

I was blessed to have Mr Coffey as a mentor and teacher. I was fortunate to be the president of the Fairfield Woods history club with Mr. Coffey. He taught us so much history in just two years! We went on many field trips with him and the history club. One such trip was to Sturbridge Village. This was very memorable as a huge snowstorm moved in while we were there!! Other “trips” were bicycle tours of Fairfield’s historic homes and tombstone rubbings! We had many fundraisers with him to pay for our tris! One such fundraiser was making Christmas Ornaments with shake it bake it! I still have one of old St Nick which I continue to hang n my tree, which reminds me every year of Mr, Coffey. Rest in peace Mr Coffey! My heart, thoughts and prayers are with Mrs. Coffey and her family!!

I have so many memories of Mr. Coffey, all of them making me smile. The Coffey family was a big part of my life growing up, from 4th grade on. Ed will truly be missed. My deepest sympathy goes out to Mrs. Coffey, Dave, Jay, Laura, the grand kids and great grand kids.

I was a student of Mr. Coffey's when I was in middle school. He was my favorite teacher! To this day, I fondly remember being so excited about his stories of King Henry the 8th and his wives. I could not wait for the next installment each day!! Thank you Mr. Coffey for those wonderful memories❤️.

I had Mr. Coffey at Fairfield Woods back in 1969-1970. I always had a love for architecture and he gave me my first appreciation of colonial architecture. I even took Historic Preservation classes in college. It’s a passion I still have today. Thank you Mr. Coffey. Jay Koolis

I had the Pleasure of having Mr. Coffey as homeroom teacher for 3 years at FHS. Class of '93. He made every day better. His smile was soo comforting, The relaxed, safe feeling he created was an amazing place to figure out your day. I take joy in knowing how happy he made so many people, and crushed that his smile and laugh will only live in our memories.
