Obituary of Nicholas J. Fama

Nicholas John Fama, age 102 of Simsbury, beloved husband of the late Maria Lanteri Fama, died peacefully on August 10, 2024 at the CT Veteran’s Home and Hospital, Rocky Hill.  Born in Ansonia on November 24, 1921, he was the son of the late Sebastiano and Sebastiana Lanteri Fama.  Raised in Ansonia, CT Mr. Fama was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Church and a 3rd Degree Member of the K of C.  As an adolescent during the depression, he and his family were faced with hardships and challenges, making him find any employment available to ensure the survival of his family.  Mr. Fama served in the Civilian Conservation Corps, a program instituted by President Roosevelt’s “New Deal” to develop the county’s natural resources and put young men to work clearing woods, building roadways, flood barriers and parks.  In 1942, Mr. Fama continued to serve his nation during WWII in the U.S. Army Air Corps.  He was part of the Eighth Air Force stationed at Grafton Underwood, a B-17 Bomber base in England. He was attached to the medics as a health inspector. When not attending to his regular duties he helped with the wounded. His unit, the 384th bombardment group, was awarded 5 Services Stars and a Distinguished Unit Badge.  Following the war, he returned home to Ansonia in 1945 and found employment in manufacturing.  For many years he worked as a machine operator and inspector for the former United Shoe Machinery Co. of Shelton, (later becoming absorbed Black & Decker) until the time of his retirement.  Staying busy during retirement, Mr. Fama worked as a driver for a medical laboratory, then became the primary caregiver for his homebound spouse.  He is survived by his devoted children, Sebastian Fama of Simsbury, Anthony Fama and his wife Dawn of Stratford and Adele Buyak of Simsbury; 8 cherished grandchildren and 7 cherished great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews.  In addition to his wife of 57 years, he was predeceased by sisters, Agnes Hudak and Anna Skowronski; and brothers, Salvatore and Santo Fama.
