Obituary of Mary J. Hvizd

Mary J. Hvizd, age 96, of Oxford, beloved wife of the late Andrew Hvizd, Jr., died peacefully in the comfort of her home on October 2, 2024.  Born in Seymour on October 14, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Dimitri “Metro” and Julia Dutkanych Zuraw.  Mrs. Hvizd was a graduate of Seymour High School and the Greenwich Hospital School of Nursing where she earned her Registered Nurse Designation.  She worked as a pediatric nurse for Greenwich Hospital, New York Hospital and Yale-New Haven Hospital, until the time of her retirement.  Mrs. Hvizd was a lifelong member of Three Saints Orthodox Church where she was active on many committees.  Together with her husband, she enjoyed extensive traveling throughout the world.

She is survived by her devoted children,  Andrew Hvizd, III and his spouse Lynn A. (Chirgwin),  Julie Marie (Hvizd) Mann, and her spouse, Steven and Gregory Joseph Hvizd – Gregory was his mother’s devoted caregiver in her later years; grandchildren, Sarah Marie (Hvizd) Sigel and her spouse, Anthony, Zachary Michael Mann and his spouse, Tamar, Andrew Joseph Hvizd and his spouse, Jordon, and Alexandra Marie Mann; and great grandchildren, Anthony Joseph Sigel, Jack Andrew Sigel, Lexie Grace Sigel, Rylee Paige Hvizd, Jase Benjamin Hvizd, Levi Joseph Hvizd , Michael Ace Caldera and Enzo Jove Caldera.

Funeral services will take place on Monday, October 7, 2024 at 10:00 AM, meeting directly at  Three Saints Orthodox Church, 26 Howard Avenue, Ansonia. Interment will follow in Three Saints Cemetery, Seymour.  Memorial contributions may be made to Three Saints Church Maintenance Trust.  The Wakelee Memorial Funeral Home, 167 Wakelee Avenue, Ansonia is in care of arrangements.  Online condolences may be made at www.wakeleememorial.com.
