Obituary of Edward Francis Szalan
SZALAN - Edward Francis Szalan, age 78, beloved husband of Anna Marie Papa Szalan of Trumbull, died peacefully on March 31, 2014 in St. Vincent’s Hospital with his family by his side. Edward fought a courageous battle with Parkinson’s for over 28 years. Born in Bridgeport on June 5, 1935, he was the son of the late John and Mary Rynkowski Szalan. Mr. Szalan was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy Reserves and a long time resident of Trumbull. Edward attended Electronics School in New Haven. He and his father started Edco Industries in Bridgeport over 45 years ago. He also worked at Harvey Hubbell in Newtown before his retirement. He enjoyed boating, fishing and collecting antiques. In addition to his wife of 53 years, he is survived by his three beautiful children, John Szalan and his wife Debbie of Shelton, Denise Walsh and her husband Kevin of Monroe and Laura Ann Brothers of Trumbull; five cherished grandsons, Ean Szalan of Trumbull, John and Edward Szalan of Shelton, and Connor and Kyle Walsh of Monroe; sister, Irene Moran of Milford; aunt, Helen Wojtkowski of Fairfield; sister-in-law, Joan Papa of Stratford; brother-in-law, Dominic Papa and his wife Jennie of FL; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. Edward also leaves behind his wonderful caregivers Brook Cadwell and Lucy Taylor. He was predeceased by brother-in-law, Joseph Papa and brother-in-law, Philip Papa and his wife Mildred. A Mass of Christian Burial, Meeting Directly at Church, will be celebrated at 9:00 AM on Saturday, April 5, 2014, in St. Theresa Church, 5301 Main St., Trumbull. Entombment with Military Honors will follow in the St. Monica Mausoleum of Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Trumbull. There are no calling hours.
