Obituary of Hedwig Czerewko

CZEREWKO- Hedwig "Hedy" (nee Stocky) Czerewko, age 92, of Shelton, passed away peacefully on December 30, 2008 in the St. Camillus Health and Rehab Center, Stamford. She was born in Drohobycz, Ukraine on October 21, 1916, the daughter of the late Theodozia and Anton Stockey; where she also completed her high school studies. The turbulence of WWII brought her family from Ukraine through Austria to Germany and finally the United States in 1950, settling in Yonkers, NY with her husband, Walter Czerewko and daughter, Sonia. A daughter Ulana was born in 1952. Hedy and Walter retired to St. Petersburg, FL in 1978 and were active in its Ukrainian Community. In 2000 Hedy and Walter relocated to Shelton. She is survived by her devoted daughters, Sonia Smith and her husband, Bernard of Darien and Ulana Stuart and her husband, Carson, of NC; cherished grandchildren, Christine Collins and her husband, Matt of MA, Bernie Smith and his wife, Annemarie of SC, Larissa Stuart of NYC and Andrew Stuart of NC; cherished great-grandchildren, James and Niall Collins and Peter and Natalie Smith. She is also survived by sisters, Gizella Kocybala of NY and Stefania Kobylecky of FL; as well as relatives in CA and Ukraine. In addition to her husband of 58 years, Mrs. Czerewko was predeceased by a sister, Stanislava Taratucky. Funeral services will take place on Saturday, January 3, 2009 at 9:15 AM from the Wakelee Memorial Funeral Home, 167 Wakelee Ave., Ansonia. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM in Sts. Peter and Paul Church, 106 Clifton Ave., Ansonia. Springtime interment will be in Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Derby.
